Eyelash tinting? What in God’s name could that mean? Just how many terms could possibly be applied to eyelashes? Well, you don’t have to panic. We explain everything you need to know about eyelash tinting here.
What is Eyelash Tinting?
Eyelash tinting is the process of thickening the appearance of your lashes, much like adding mascara, but without actually applying the mascara. Sounds cool, right? However, eyelash tinting should not be confused with lash lift, as it often is. Keep reading to find out more about eyelash tinting.

Eyelash tinting is a method of intensifying the color of your lashes using permanent, cream-based dyes, or a semi-permanent vegetable-based dye. The vegetable-based dye helps to reduce the irritation around your eye. You can think of eyelash tinting as a semi-permanent mascara, or even like getting your hair dyed, except a different type of dye will be used on your lashes.
The procedure is the closest thing to naturally defined lashes without the hassle of wearing fake lashes, nor the messiness of mascara. In fact, according to Clementina Richardson, celebrity lash artist, and founder of New York based lash brand, Envious Lashes, “Lash tints are a happy medium between mascara and [lash] extensions, giving you a bolder, wide-eyed look for a relatively affordable price and with very little upkeep.”
How long does it take to get an eyelash tint?
Getting an eyelash tint are not as time-consuming as you might assume. On the contrary, lash tints take about twenty to forty minutes. This means you can even pop out during your lunch break to get them done.
The process involves applying the dye to the length of every single lash and then giving it time to tint. During this time, the client keeps their eye closed.
How much do lash tints cost?
Eyelash tinting is not called a savior for no reason. Not only does it save you makeup time and take little time to do, it is also pretty affordable. However, depending on where you are getting the procedure done, with about $40 to $80, you can get eyelash tinting done and be free of eyelash thoughts for the next couple of weeks.
How long does eyelash tinting last?
An eyelash tint will usually last about four weeks, the same amount of time it will take your lashes to grow, fall out and be replaced by new ones. As this happens, you will notice your lashes getting lighter and lighter in color. Do not be deceived into thinking the dye washed off, as it is actually permanent and will stay on as long as the tinted lashes last.
For a longer lasting tint, we recommend that you keep your freshly tinted lashes from getting wet for at least the first 24 hours after getting them done. This includes avoiding steam from facials and heavy eye makeup. In addition, we also advise that you avoid oil-based makeup products, harsh skincare products (such as chlorine), and even prolonged sun exposure as these can remove the tint.
Is it safe?
Eyelash tinting is safe, depending on who you ask, and depending on where you get it done. Like any other procedure involving the eyes, we recommend that you get your eyelash tinting done only by a professional. However, this may be a tough call because the service is still prohibited in many states because the dyes being used are considered harmful by the FDA.
Cities such as Florida, New York, Illinois and Texas have several eyelash tinting businesses, but states like California still prohibit the use of some harmful chemicals as cosmetics products. And some of these chemicals can be found in eyelash tinting products. This is because the said chemicals can cause irritation, serious eye injuries, or even blindness.
According to dermatologists, eyelash tint dyes range from food dyes, semi-permanent dyes and hair dyes to even coal tar dyes! These can be responsible for the irritation and allergic reactions that occur after getting a tint done.
There’s more. Having an eyelash tint done regularly can dry out your lashes, and this can lead to itching, irritation and infection. Therefore, we recommend applying a lash serum to stimulate growth and keep your eyelashes in perfect condition.
What are the benefits of eyelash tinting?
They are kind of apparent already, aren’t they? From being time-savers, to being very affordable, eyelash tinting is not short on benefits at all.
Should I get an eyelash tint?
If you have fair hair, and hence, fair lashes, then eyelash tinting might be a good investment for you. This is because eyelash tinting will make your usually hard-to-notice lashes more pronounced. However, if you have dark lashes, an eyelash tint may not do noticeably much for your lashes. Hence, we recommend a lash lift for you as it’s a better option for making your already somewhat obvious lashes even more obvious.
